Save Energy - and Money - on LED Holiday Lighting

December 14th, 2007

Link to Story
Rising energy costs don’t mean the end of holiday cheer. In fact, new technology can provide all the dazzle and fun of seasons past, along with greater convenience and lower energy bills - for residences, businesses, and municipalities. LED (Light Emitting Diodes) light strings are safer, easier to use, and cheaper to operate than the old incandescent bulbs - and that’s not all they have to offer.

LEDs have come a long way since they first appeared on displays for calculators in the 1970s. Today they are available in a variety of bulb styles and colors and on strings of up to 240 bulbs - and up to 100 strings can be attached together. Whether shaped like a small globe, a flame-tip, a multi-faceted bulb, a rope, an icicle, or a mini-light, the red, blue, green, orange, white, and now gold LEDs are attracting a lot of attention this holiday season. And some of the newer strings have controllers that permit special effects like color changes. Safe to use both indoors and outdoors, LEDs are cool to the touch and the epoxy lenses are nearly indestructible. They have a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours (indoor) and up to 50,000 hours (outdoor), and most manufacturers guarantee them for 20 years. And, in the unlikely event that a bulb burns out, the remaining bulbs stay lit, making replacement a snap.

And now for the really big benefit: they use about 100 times less energy than the standard (C-7) bulbs and 10 times less than mini-lights. If you assume lighting 500 bulbs for 5 hours a day for 30 days (at 8 cents per kWh), you can expect to spend $24 to light standard C-7 bulbs, $2.40 for mini-lights, and only 24 cents for LEDs! Even though the initial purchase cost of LEDs is a little more than mini-lights, they are still cheaper to operate over time, given not only energy costs but replacement costs, as well. And LEDs provide a significant savings over C-7 bulbs in purchase, energy, and replacement costs - more than four times cheaper, in fact! For even more energy savings, a programmable timer can limit the lighting of the display to selected hours and days.

So, who should consider LED holiday lighting? If you are a homeowner who is considering adding to your seasonal display or replacing broken or malfunctioning light strings, LEDs may be just what you are looking for. A business that is looking to attract attention, as well as make a wise financial investment, should investigate LED lights. And municipalities who want to take the lead in demonstrating energy conservation in a very visible way should consider phasing LEDs into their operations budget. Switching to LED holiday lighting will lessen energy demand (and costs), reduce the number of broken light strings in the landfills, and limit maintenance expenses and hassles. Oh, and they look great, too!

Des Moines - Day 4 and 5

November 8th, 2007

Greetings All!

Pictures will be coming soon of all the decorating we have been doing!  The last couple of days we have been busy on Court Avenue, a “chess” area by Starbucks on Locust Street and today we were busy at City Hall.  What has been so great about what we have been doing are all of the colors we are putting up.  Very little warm white and a lot of Green, Red, Blue, Purple, Gold.  Colors really spruce things up!

As we were turning on Gateway Park tonight we noticed that the gold and purple were next to each other in our color patterns.  Looks like we sub consciously put up vikings colors!

Tomorrow we are going to finish up East Locust Street, plug in everything as well as put the final touches on City Hall by installing the roof lighting.  It is very dark as you look across the river to City Hall and the lights are just going to make it shine!!!

Tomorrow night at the recommendation of one of my residental customers in Minnesota we are going to go to Azalea (http://www.azaleadsm.com) for dinner, we have heard good things from Joyce! :)

Have a good night!

Des Moines - Days 2 and 3

November 6th, 2007

Greetings all!

Sorry for the lack of post the last couple days.  It has been wild and crazy down here!!!  We have been busy putting up lights on trees, lots and lots of trees.  About 90 or so to be more exact!  It was easy going until yesterday when mother nature decided to say hellow to us with winds of 30 miles an hour all day long!  Made for a very interesting morning while we finished up some tall trees.

We have now successfully finished 2 areas down here.  Western Gateway Park and East Locust street.  We have been using a great color scheme using all the colors (Blue/Gold/Purple/Green/Red)  It really has been the year for colors and it looks fantastic!

We are onto Court Avenue today as well as a “Chess” Area.  Below are some pictures of the last couple of days.  Talk to you this evening!

Des Moines - Day 1

November 4th, 2007

Day 1 in Des Moines began as the first hard freeze of the year for the area.  It was a brisk 32 degrees this morning, but it warmed up nicely today.

We got a great start today and got most of Western Gateway Park completed.  We met a lot of great people today, got invited to a few churches for tomorrow overall the people we talked to were very excited to see what we were preparing.

One more nice day tomorrow before mother nature decides to take a colder turn on us!

Below are a few pictures from today, no pictures with the lights on just yet!

Des Moines - Arrival!!!

November 3rd, 2007

Derek, Dan and I made it!  We got here in pretty good time considering all the product we were hauling down here!  We met with some of the people that we have been working with to discuss some plans and got city hall prepped to get the lights put up on Friday.

We are starting Western Gateway Park tomorrow morning and taking advantage of the weekend and lack of traffic.

Attached are some pictures of City hall and taken from the top of city hall.  Enjoy!

Mosquito Magnet Parent company files for Bankruptcy

July 13th, 2007

The parent company American Biophysics Corp has filed for bankruptcy and has sold off the Mosquito Magnet to another company.    The link to the story is below:
http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2007/04/18/2532253.htm

American Biophysics which already had very poor customer service regarding the Mosquito Magnet has now put that product line into the hands of someone else who did not even develop the system.  What does that hold for the future of the Magnet?  Nobody can tell you, but what a lot of people are scared of is that the lack of help they get from support already is that it might just disappear all together.  And what for replacement parts, what is to come of that?

Besides the above issues, people I have sold the Mosquito Killing System to 90% of them have changed from the Magnet to the MKS.  Why?  The MKS does not require you to buy Octenol, replacement nets, there is no clogging issue like the propane systems have.  The MKS is maintenance free, all you need to worry about is replacing the CO2 tank every 30 days and the machine does the rest.

When I ask people why they chose the magnet to begin with most people say it is due to it being “cheap”.  They are right it is cheap, lets say $300, but what you’ll find is that a good portion of them last maybe 1 year, and then break down and need to find replacement parts and/or buy a new one.  Now you are up to $600 you see where this is headed.

Stick with the one product that reduces your mosquito population and will not break down on you has a great track record the Mosquito Killing System (MKS)
